Incognito does not hide you from Wi-Fi: what it does and does not do
The most believed privacy myth on the internet, retired in five minutes: private windows, the router, and what actually hides you.
The short version. Incognito cleans your own device after the fact — history, cookies, form data, gone on close. It changes exactly nothing on the network: DNS, SNI, destination addresses and timing leave the machine identically, and the router, the ISP and the sites themselves see everything they always saw. If the threat is the network, you need a tunnel; if the threat is the next person touching the device, incognito is exactly right.
What incognito actually does
A private window is amnesia for one window: no history entries, no persistent cookies, no form autocomplete kept, no cache reused afterwards. Close it and the device forgets the session — which is precisely useful when the next user of the device is the threat: shared family PC, a friend's laptop, a surprise gift you do not want autocompleting next week. That is the whole job. It was never designed to hide anything from anyone else on the network, and every browser says so on the new-tab page most people skip.
What the network still sees
From the router's point of view, an incognito request is byte-identical to a normal one: same DNS lookup in the clear, same SNI hostname opening the TLS connection, same destination address, same sizes and timing. The ISP keeps the same logs. The sites set the same fingerprint. Your employer on a managed device sees the same everything. Deleting local history after the fact is like shredding your copy of a letter you already mailed — the recipients kept theirs.
When incognito is genuinely useful
- Shared devices: no logins left behind, no history for the next user, no autocomplete betrayals.
- Surprise shopping: no cookies for retargeting pixels to read later, no “because you viewed” on the shared account — provided you also stay logged out.
- Clean sessions: testing a site as a logged-out visitor, comparing prices without your cookie history tilting them.
- One-off logins on borrowed hardware: borrowed laptop, hotel business center — leave nothing on the machine (and still assume the network watched).
The combo that actually works
Match the tool to the watcher. Next person on this device? Incognito, then close the window. Owner of this Wi-Fi, ISP, hotel gateway? A full-tunnel VPN with in-tunnel DNS — the traffic leaves encrypted and the lookups go with it. Trackers following you across sites? Logged-out browsing plus tracker blocking. Fingerprinting? A mainstream hardened browser setup. No single layer does the others' jobs, and every “one click for total privacy” pitch collapses the moment you ask from whom.
Private windows vs separate profiles
A private window is amnesia: nothing persists past closing. A separate browser profile is compartmentalization: its own cookies, logins and history that persist across restarts but never touch your main profile. On a shared family PC, profiles beat private windows — each person keeps continuity without cross-contamination, and the gift-buyer gets a space that never autocompletes in the main one. On borrowed hardware, private windows win instead: there is nothing to create and nothing to forget deleting. And one warning covering both: neither hides a thing from the network. Profiles and private windows divide the device; only a tunnel divides the network.
