Why your partner sees ads for what you searched (it is the IP, not your mic)
The classic ruined surprise: you look for a gift, they get the ads. Nobody is listening to your microphone — your whole home shares one public IP, and adtech is delighted to mistake your household for one person.
The short version. Every device at home leaves the house through the same public IP address. Ad networks see one “household” and retarget all of it with what any of it looked at — so your search becomes their ad. A VPN breaks the shared-IP signal because each device exits elsewhere; it cannot break logged-in accounts, shared cookies or the same streaming profile, which re-join you instantly.
The mystery: the ring, the jersey, the Maldives
It always starts the same way. Someone searches for an engagement ring on their laptop; that evening their partner's feed fills with the exact jewellers. Someone shops cycling kit on the sofa; their spouse asks why the other one is getting cycling ads. Friends talk about the Maldives in a pub; next day, flights. The first theory is always the microphone — and it is almost always wrong. Recording, transcribing and exfiltrating audio around the clock would drain batteries, flood data plans and be corporate suicide if discovered. The boring truth is cheaper: you share an address.
Your IP is the building's doorway
At home, every phone, laptop, tablet and TV leaves through one public IP — the router's. To an ad network, your household looks like a single device with many screens until something (a login, a cookie, a fingerprint) tells it otherwise. And here is the perverse incentive: the platform would rather show the ring ad to the wrong person in the house than miss the buyer. Over-targeting the household converts; precision is optional.
Same logic on shared Wi-Fi anywhere: the pub, the office, the in-laws' house. Coincide in place and time with someone who searched, and the algorithm happily assumes shared interests. Add a social graph (you are friends, you check in together) and the “coincidence” starts looking like telepathy.
How adtech groups households: login vs guess
Two mechanisms, very different strength:
- Deterministic — the login. Same Google, Apple, Meta or Amazon account on two devices? That is not a guess, that is a fact: both devices are you (or your household). Confidence near total. Nothing about networks matters here.
- Probabilistic — the guess. Same public IP plus overlapping hours plus similar browsing patterns: probably one household. Weaker, but applied at massive scale it only needs to be right often enough to be profitable.
Once grouped, the effect crosses devices both ways: book flights on the home PC, get hotel ads on the phone. Nobody read your messages. You were filed under the same roof.
What a VPN changes — and what it cannot
With a VPN on each device, every device exits through the VPN server's address instead of the home IP. The shared-doorway signal breaks: your search and their feed no longer come from the same place. DNS travels inside the tunnel too, so the local network stops contributing lookups to the profile.
What it cannot break: anything you carry yourself. Same logged-in account, same cookies, same browser fingerprint, same TV profile — the deterministic half re-joins you the moment you log in, VPN or not. A VPN moves your network origin; it does not give you a new identity. Anyone promising otherwise is selling.
The surprise-gift checklist
- Shop in a separate browser (or profile) with no logins — never the everyday one.
- Stay logged out of the big accounts, or accept that the retargeting pixel will file the product under your name.
- Connect the VPN so the purchase does not come from the home IP.
- Do not use the shared Prime / family / household account for the surprise.
- Remember the rest of the house: shared tablets, the living-room TV recommendations, synced photos of the cart.
